GIS format requirements

At sea training programme cruise

Information for the Detailed Inventory should be provided in the formats specified below:

1. An inventory and description of the oceanographic data (physical, chemical and pollutants) for the Caspian Sea region.

Information for each cruise (data set) must contain brief description file and file (worksheet table) with the stations information.

Brief Description File

All information files (worksheets) prepared for the Inventory are accompanied by brief description files containing concise information on their origin, instrumentation, method, units, data processing and other topics. Each item in a file starts from the name of the item prefixed by an asterisk and followed by a colon.

Each file contains the information in following order:

  • Stations information file(s): Name(s) of the information file(s) described.

  • Ship (station) name: Name of the ship (station) at which the measurements were made.

  • Expedition: Name (number) of the expedition.

  • Parameters: Name, units (and brief description if necessary) of the parameters included in data file(s).

  • Instruments and methods: Brief description of the instruments and methods used for measurements.

  • Accuracy: estimation of the lower limit and precision of the measurements.

  • Processing (if applied): Which type of processing was used and with what characteristics (smoothing, etc.).

  • Principal investigator(s): Name and institutions of persons responsible for the each type of measurements.

  • Digitization: Which type of digitization was used (single entry, double-key entry, data were obtained in digital form), where and when it was made. The name of responsible person.

  • Remarks: Other topics responsible person assumes useful.

  • Completed by: Name and institution of a person prepared this file.

  • Date: Date of the creation (last revision) of this file in form DD.MM.YYYY.

  • Source of data: Source (subsource of data) in form of (abbreviated) institution name and researcher name if necessary.

An example of the brief description file:

  • Stations information file(s): av21chem.txt, av21ctd.txt

  • Ship (station) name: R/V Akademik Vernadsky (MHI, Ukraine).

  • Expedition: Cruise number 21, August 1979 - October 1979.

  • Parameters: temperature and salinity, light attenuation coefficient (414 nm), dissolved oxygen, inorganic phosphates, silicates, Secchi disk.

  • Instruments and methods: temperature and salinity were measured by   the CTD-probe ISTOK-3 and with Nansen Bottles and reversing thermometers,   Logarithmic Photometer-Transparency Meter (LFP 414), dissolved oxygen was   determined by the Winkler's method, methods of Murphy and Riley was used  to determine inorganic phosphates and silicates

  • Accuracy:

  • Processing (if applied):

  • Principal investigator(s): temperature and salinity - V.G. Kiryuhin, chemical parameters - A.G. Yanchilenko, optical parameters - V.I. Man'kovsky (MHI, Ukraine).

  • Digitization: double entry at the MHI (Sevastopol, Ukraine).

  • Remarks: see the complete descriptions of methods and formats in the supplied file MHI_data.txt.

  • Completed by: L. Galkovskaya (MHI, Ukraine).

  • Date:20.06.1999.

  • Source of data: MHI, Ukraine

File (worksheet table) with the stations information

This file must contain the following information in Excel tables (for each cruise or data set):

  • station name (1-10 characters, numbers or/and letters);

  • latitude (in degrees);

  • longitude (in degrees);

  • date (preferable format DD/MM/YYYY);

  • time (optional);

  • sea depth (optional);

  • flag/cast columns for each measured variable (0 means – no measurements of this variables, 1- one cast, 2 – two casts, etc.). Only 0 & 1 can be used with meaning – there are measurements of this variable at this station or not.
